From the Costa de Lisboa you can head south of the river Tagus, where you will gradually discover the huge plain of Alentejo.
Marvão, Castelo de Vida, Portalegre, Monsaraz, and Serpa are some of the mountain towns surrounded by medieval walls. They stand like sentinels keeping watch over the vast plain, over which one can see sunsets that set the landscape on fire. One cannot miss Évora, whose historic center has been classified by Unesco as part of the heritage of mankind. Arraiolos is a center for making carpets that bear the same name. Inside the castle of Estremoz and Alvito one finds luxurious pousadas, while at Vila Viçosa stands the palace where the last kings of Portugal once lived. Beja dominates the plain with its magnificent main tower looming above its historic castle.
Sweetmeats, originally made by the local convents, are quiet a treat.
