"The city of the seven hills" and capital of Portugal , is a city of surprises and contrasts: twisting, narrow streets in the older quarters, spaceous avenues dating from the beginning of the century and, close to the centre, famous monuments, some of which has been classified by UNESCO. There are excellents beaches nearby and the sorrounding country is unexpectelly rural, with farming villages and fishing ports along with some little-Know artistic gems which are well worth seeing. The quarters of Castelo and Alfama, the Belém
zone and the Baixa are only a few of the places reflecting Lisbon's ancient
history.
Grater Lisbon can be defined as a large circle divided by the river and outlined by towns such as Cascais, Sintra, Vila Franca, Montijo and Almada. A large number of industries and services are concentrated in this region along with the triving agriculture of the Ribatejo province (Vila Franca de Xira), which is one of the most fertile areas in the country. It is here that the black, fighting bulls
"toiros bravos" and the magnificent horses, which take part in the traditional
bullfights, are bred.
